Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
1. Who we are
Ligoscope ("we", "us", "our") operates the Ligoscope mobile application — a social diary for films and TV series. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.
For any question about this policy or your data, contact us at: hello@ligoscope.com
2. What data we collect
When you create an account and use Ligoscope, we collect:
- Email address (required for account creation and authentication)
- Display name, username, and bio (chosen by you)
- Profile photo and cover image (optional, uploaded by you)
- Social media handles you choose to add to your profile (Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, website)
- Film and series logs: titles watched, dates, ratings, written reviews, and tags
- Your Scope (the titles you've marked as want-to-watch), favorites, and lists you create, including any titles, notes, and descriptions you write
- Comments you post on other users' reviews
- Follow, block, and mute relationships with other users
- Streaming service preferences and region (used to filter what's available in your Scope)
- Push notification token (to deliver notifications to your device)
- Coarse location — city level only — when you choose to share your watch location on Scope Map. Your exact address or precise coordinates are never collected or stored; location is rounded to roughly a 1km grid before it is saved.
- Basic device and usage diagnostics (device type, OS version, crash reports) used only to keep the app stable.
3. How we use your data
We use the data listed above to provide and improve the Ligoscope service:
- To create, secure, and manage your account
- To display your diary, profile, and activity to you and (based on your privacy settings) other users
- To show anonymous, aggregated regional watch activity on Scope Map
- To send you notifications about follows, likes, comments, and activity digests (only if you grant permission)
- To generate personalized recommendations, your taste profile, and similar-taste matches with other users, computed from your own logs and ratings
- To detect and prevent spam, abuse, and content that violates our Terms of Service
4. AI-powered features and automated processing
Ligoscope uses artificial intelligence (via OpenAI's API) to power several features. We designed these features so that the AI only ever processes the minimum text needed for that specific feature, and never uses your content to train any model. Specifically:
- Content moderation: when you publish a review, comment, diary entry, bio, or list, the text is checked by an automated moderation service before publishing, to detect content that violates our community guidelines (harassment, hate speech, threats, etc.).
- Spoiler detection: review and log text may be analyzed to detect plot spoilers and suggest a spoiler tag.
- Recommendations and taste matching: your ratings, genres, and watch history are used to build a numerical "taste profile" (a vector embedding) used to recommend titles and to compute taste-compatibility with other users. This profile never includes your name, email, or any text you wrote — only anonymized taste signals.
- Writing assistance: optional features that suggest a clearer phrasing of a review you wrote, a caption for sharing, or a short summary of public community reviews. These run only when you explicitly request them, and any AI-generated suggestion is shown to you for review — it is never published automatically.
Text sent to OpenAI for these purposes is transmitted securely and is not used by OpenAI to train their models, per OpenAI's API data usage policy. You can read more at openai.com/policies.
5. Privacy controls
Every log and review you create has its own visibility setting: Public, Friends Only, or Private. You control exactly who can see your diary entries.
Your account itself can be set to Private, in which case new followers must be approved before they can see your activity. You can also hide your diary, Scope, or favorites independently of your account's privacy setting, from Settings → Privacy.
Scope Map activity is aggregated and anonymous. Only a rounded, city-level location is associated with activity on the map — never your username, exact address, or any identifying information. You can turn location sharing off at any time.
You can block or mute any other user. Blocking removes any existing follow relationship in both directions and hides that user's profile content from you entirely. Muting hides their activity from your feeds without removing the follow relationship.
6. Third-party services
Ligoscope relies on the following third-party services to operate:
- Supabase — database, file storage, and authentication. Your account data, logs, and uploaded images are stored on Supabase's infrastructure.
- OpenAI — powers the AI features described in section 4 (moderation, recommendations, writing assistance). See that section for details on what is sent and why.
- The Movie Database (TMDB) — film and series metadata, posters, and streaming availability. We query TMDB's public API using your search terms; no personal account data is sent to TMDB.
- Google Sign-In — if you choose to sign in with Google, Google provides us with your name, email, and profile photo to create your Ligoscope account. We do not receive your Google password.
- Sentry — crash reporting. If the app crashes, anonymized diagnostic data (device type, OS version, stack trace) may be sent to Sentry to help us fix bugs. No personal content (logs, reviews, email) is included.
- Expo — push notification delivery, using your device's push token.
7. Where your data is stored
Your account data, logs, reviews, lists, and uploaded images are stored and processed in the United States, regardless of where you access Ligoscope from. If you are located in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, this means your personal data is transferred outside of that region. Our infrastructure providers (Supabase, OpenAI) make GDPR-compliant data processing commitments — including, where applicable, Standard Contractual Clauses — that govern this transfer.
8. Data sharing
We do not sell or rent your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for third-party advertising, and we do not show third-party ads in the app.
Public logs, reviews, lists, and comments are visible to other Ligoscope users according to the visibility setting you chose for that content. Your followers count, profile information, and any content marked Public are visible to anyone using the app, including on the public web preview pages used when a link to your content is shared outside the app.
9. Data retention
Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete my account. Deleting your account permanently and irreversibly removes your authentication credentials and, as a consequence, all data linked to it — logs, reviews, lists, Scope, comments, and uploaded images.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under GDPR in the EU/UK and KVKK in Turkey), you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data, directly from your profile edit screen
- Delete your data, via in-app account deletion or by contacting us
- Export your data — Settings → Account → Export my data lets you download your logs, reviews, lists, and Scope as a file
- Restrict or object to certain processing, or withdraw consent (e.g. for location sharing or notifications) at any time
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@ligoscope.com.
California residents (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know what personal information we collect about you, the right to delete it, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. As stated in Section 8, we do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising or any other purpose. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@ligoscope.com.
11. Children
Ligoscope is not directed at children under 13, and our Terms of Service require users to be at least 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
12. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), row-level access controls on our database so users can only access data permitted by their own privacy settings, and column-level protections on sensitive fields. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information using commercially reasonable safeguards.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example as we add new features. We will update the "Last updated" date above, and notify you of significant changes via the app or email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
